the promise of better things lying ahead

This might be the first day that it was difficult to decide which
photo to use for my 365 post. I eventually went with the photograph
with the more obvious connection to the historical significance of the
day, but this photograph complements a narrative that I still want to
capture.

The day began ugly enough, with overcast skies and rain showers
passing through and setting a somber mood that perhaps fit well with
the day's event--a music festival that was also a 9/11 memorial and a
tribute to the nation's first responders and those in service. Later
in the afternoon, though, the skies cleared and the sun graced us with
its presence. Were it not for a last-minute reprieve of two fellow
FAST members arriving to take over the night shift, I would have been
working the whole night. Having been released from duty, I motored
home not under overcast skies but clear skies; the sun, low to the
horizon, cast everything in a beautiful light that carried with it
feelings of hope and optimism that replaced the sorrow that
accompanied me before.

It was difficult not to see some sort of symbolism in the
orchestration of events that day.
